Manuel Raeder – Waly Salomão, PAN CINEMA PERMANENTE, for  Carlos Nader

What’s the idea behind your printed poster ?
The cobbler shouldn’t rise above the height of his sandals
- so the Latin saying goes
May the cobbler then go down to the sole
When the sole becomes a screen
Where shown and glued
is the life of asphalt below.

What turns you on, as a graphic designer, in other words, what inspires you ?
Looking around me, seeing and being a human being on this planet and still strongly believing that we able to change many things that are really going wrong on this planet. Also talking and exchanging ideas and conversations with friends and family is a great inspiration that I’m thankful for everyday.

Who are your heroes?
I don’t have one particular hero, there are so many people in this world that have achived amazing things. Usually I’m more astonished by people that achive something on a very small scale and through that  have had a greater impact on larger things. For example at this moment I’m reading a book by Julio Cortazar and I’m amazed by simply trying to follow his ideas and how he used words and writing as a medium.

Could you give us your definition of a good design in a few words?
The objects or things that I encounter that amaze me the most usually, have a variety of line of thought integrated, definitely are not a solution to a problem but do get you and me to disagree, are almost nothing, engage it’s own economy and production tools in an intelligent way, are simple, are derived from it’s own content, clumsy, not definable, open up new ways of reading, and asks questions and also needs to be a bit shity.

Metahaven – Transaction Record (Wau Holland Foundation)

What’s the idea behind your printed poster ?
In making our contribution to Kunstkammer, for us the main inspiration came from the idea that the poster is actually for sale. Half of the funds raised per poster will be donated to WikiLeaks, through its intermediary, the Wau Holland Foundation. By designing the poster as a ‘Transaction Record’, we invite the buyer to acknowledge this relationship. The poster/’artwork’ from the Kunstkammer becomes the record an authorization of the transaction.

What turns you on, as a graphic designer, in other words, what inspires you ?
Art. Nature. Fiction. Politics. People who are passionate, and good at what they do.

Who are your heroes?
Too many to mention.

Could you give us your definition of a good design in a few words?
Good design is what survives time.

Åbäke - Victoria and alferD: Mammals

What’s the idea behind your printed poster ?
The Victoria & Alferd Museum is a growing collection of artefacts, objects, stories, existing or imagined. The idea was born from a few facts: the generally undisputed legitimacy of the museum institution, despite its young age and numerous mistakes. The geo-political aspect of its own importance, the relying to colonialism or worse religious « rights » in order to constitute a history of the winner’s world. Our collection, however, starts from the modest details of preserved mistakes, rather than revisionism. We do not see space (storage?), money (acquisition, conservation?), fiction, geography, time or any material parameter as an obstacle to the connection we propose. Enjoy the visits.

What turns you on, as a graphic designer, in other words, what inspires you ?
Mistakes, eccentricity and being able to realise one is wrong.

Who are your heroes?
Heroes are dangerous and one usually prefers dead ones as they cannot disappoint anymore.

Could you give us your definition of a good design in a few words?
Definition is perhaps too much but one criteria is bizarre-ness, especially to one’s own aesthetic and conceptual tastes.

Karl Nawrot19 Templates, 2 Post-it® & Dusts

What’s the idea behind your printed poster ?
I started making my own tools a few years ago, to help me create abstract illustrations and typographical characters from geometrical or random shapes. This collection of tools includes ink stamps, circular record templates, geometrical stencils and cardboard typographical modules. The poster shows a part of this collection as well as a selection of 19 stencils created between 2008 and 2010. I also slipped in some old scraps that haunt the finished object and a test marked on Post-it®.

What turns you on, as a graphic designer, in other words, what inspires you ?
The drawings that i trace in the morning when a part of myself is still asleep.

Who are your heroes?
Bill Sienkiewicz & Ed Fella among others.

Could you give us your definition of a good design in a few words?
A good design gives you the feeling of a piece stuck between past & future.

OFFICEABCSigne (459) est un astéroïde découvert en 1900 par Max Wolf

What’s the idea behind your printed poster ?
We wished to study space archeology (space of the exhibition, space of the exhibition room or rather of its chamber, space of the poster, etc.) and discoveries. In the same way as « every wreck in our reach must be considered a precipitate of our desire » (Breton), Kunstkammer’s project is a way of redefining these discoveries, of uniting them in one sculptured and diserable image. A notebook, more literally a diary, completes our poster. Reading it should not give an explanation to the project but the two are to be bound. The diary is a discursive continuation of scraps and potential trails.Eventually, you could almost imagine this poster actually becoming the very precipitate, a cristal as it were…

What turns you on, as a graphic designer, in other words, what inspires you?
Whenever possible, we really enjoy collaborating with intriguing people. We’re very curious of unexpected collisions and influences: in a way something close to the Kuleshov effect…

Who are your heroes?
Today Georges Didi-Huberman. Yesterday Alphonse Darlu. Fictively Ferdinand Griffon and the Silver Surfer.

Could you give us your definition of a good design in a few words?
« Une affaire de goût » and « Une étrange Affaire » perhaps…
